Chinese Neon Orange Peking Glass Cameo Vase, 1960's, China
About the Item
A striking Chinese neon orange and white carved cameo Peking glass pear shaped vase, circa 1960's, China.
The Peking glass pear shaped vase of yuhuchunping form, with a bulbous body set on a short foot, a tall, skinny neck, and a flaring mouth.
The vase is decorated with a garden scene of a pair of birds perched on rocky outcrops surrounded by oversized blooms of blossoming peony. The male bird, most likely depicting a golden pheasant, stands upon one leg, his long tail feathers trailing behind. The smaller and more demure female perches below, looking up at his glorious display. The neck of the vase decorated with a design of stylized banana leaves.
Known as Peking glass, it is very similar to western cameo glass, in which layers of different colored glass are fused together, then cut and polished down to reveal the different colors. In this case, the base is of an opaque white glass with a layer of transparent bright neon orange on top.
