About the Item

Hand-thrown and boldly expressive, this English studio pottery vase dates to the 1980s, reflecting the period’s renewed fascination with organic forms and artisanal glazing. Crafted from terracotta, its urn-shaped body is coated in a vivid cobalt blue glaze with a soft, matte finish. Around the ruffled lip, a drip glaze in natural clay tones descends with quiet precision—gestural detailing that lends both texture and tonal contrast. In low relief around the belly, stylised marine motifs—including a fish—add a playful yet symbolic dimension, evoking coastal folklore and decorative traditions. The composition recalls the spirited experimentation of Brannam Ware, as well as the sculptural clarity found in the work of P. Ipsens Enke, where surface and form are allowed to move fluidly together. Measuring 18 cm in height with a diameter of 12 cm, the vase is in very good vintage condition, showing only light wear consistent with age and use. A compelling example of late 20th-century British studio ceramics, balancing graphic form with narrative detail.
