About the Item

An antique pair of Paris porcelain vases in the taste of Darte manufacture, early 19th century high-end French production circa 1810 - 1815 (Empire period). Spectacular, fully decorated model, a polychromatic hand-painted mythological scene on one side, a deep purple / burgundy background decorated with gilt palms on the other side. One scene pictures Marius in Minturnae (symbol of resilience facing difficulty) after Drouais ; the other one shows blind Oedipus and Antigone (symbol of family drama and loyalty). The superb matte and shiny gilt finish enhances contrasts (gold burnished with agate). The handles are swan-shaped, which is another high quality sign. Their tall height, the colors and gilt freshness, the richness of the ornamentation make them spectacular. At that time, such tall vases (41.5cm = 16" 1/4) were luxurious production. The high quality of finishes makes us think about Darte Manufacture work, although there is no mark underneath. They are ideal pieces to complete a neoclassical decoration : to be placed in a large room such as a vestibule or a living room, above a fireplace on either side of a tall ormolu mantel clock, on an Empire chest of drawers or console. They are very well preserved given their age : they have remained completely undamaged, gilt is still outstandingly fresh (a small area is a little attenuated on the foot). Our pair of vases is a very rare set to find in such a superb condition. Height : 41.5cm (16" 1/4) Width including handles : 20cm (7" 7/8)
