Empoli Emerald Green Verde Op-Art Glass Vase with Handles, Signed, Italy 1960
About the Item
Vintage large, urn-shaped glass vase features elegant Op-Art design on the body of the vase and highly detailed ribbed handles. Monochromatic emerald green glass appears darker in thicker, heavier base and the handles, framing and showcasing the thinner, lighter, textured body of the vase. Tall, streamlined shape of the vase merges Art Deco decor elements with Mid Century Modern aesthetic.
The vase is signed with the scalloped red & gold foil "Made in Italy" label, one of the typical labels for Empoli glassware; the label is damaged, but is readable and easily recognizable. Verde (Italian for "green") glass, one of the main types of Empoli glass, takes its name from the traditional green color of Empoli glass, which was a result of the content of local sand used for glass production. Empoli manufacturers that produced Verde glassware include Vetrerie E. Taddei & C., Vetreria Etrusca, Vetreria Toso Bagnoli, CLAVE, Vetrerie Empolesi, and Vetrerie di Empoli; however, it's hard to positively attribute the piece to a particular maker, as there was a large amount of glass manufacturers in the Empoli area, and the labels usually bore the name of importers, or simply read "Made in Italy".

His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

Jon Kuhn Early Sculptural Op-Art Vase, American Art Studio Glass, 1982
By Jon Kuhn
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Triangular faceted vase features a graphic pattern of ruby red, white, and dichroic glass encased in clear glass layers in sommerso technique. The body of the vase is cut and polished in triangular shape, exposing complex, colorful core; the subtle sheen of dichroic glass adds complexity and visual interest to a reserved color scheme.
The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom; this rare, hard to find example of American studio glass would make a great gift to any studio glass, art collector, or modern design enthusiast.
Jon Kuhn is one of the foremost glass artists in his field, creating highly intricate architectural glass art sculpture that has won world-wide acclaim. He received BFA from Washburn University in 1974, MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978, and Honorary DFA from Washburn University in 2006. Jon Kuhn early work was done in molten glass, but currently he works in cold glass that is cut, polished, and fused, resulting in sculptures that take in surrounding light, then reflects and refracts it back; they appear to change color and radiance when viewed from different angles and lighting. Kuhn creates cold glass art in a variety of shapes and forms, but he is perhaps best known for his glass cubes which contain a colorful glass interior cased in clear glass. Kuhn’s work stands out for its complexity, its geometric forms, and for its mesmerizing presence. Jon Kuhn glass...
