About the Item

Exquisite murano glass vase documented to designer Flavio Poli for Seguso Vetri d'Arte circa 1950. Made using Flavio Poli's signature sommerso technique that employs layer of glass submerged one into the other to create a harmonious composition of colors. This vase is an iconic example of the finest in mid century modern italian design. Sommerso is an Italian glassmaking technique that creates layers of glass in contrasting colors. The word sommerso means "submerged" in Italian. Antonio Da Ross, a Venetian glassmaker, is believed to have first developed the technique in Murano in the late 1930s. Flavio Poli (1900–1984) was an Italian artist, known for his designs in glass. Born in 1900, he was trained at the Istituto d'Arte di Venezia, then began work as a ceramicist. Flavio Poli was appointed artistic director of Barovier, Seguso, Ferro (later Seguso Vetri d’Arte) in 1934, where he devised a unique style of 'submerged' glass, with several transparent layers, one over the other.
