About the Item

Richly colored and deeply textured, this French Majolica vase dates to circa 1900 and presents a striking tableau of natural beauty. The tall, ovoid form is decorated in high relief with a vibrant scene featuring a proud rooster surrounded by blooming irises and delicate butterflies, all set against a golden ochre ground. The enamel work is finely detailed and crisply rendered, with a palette that includes cobalt, celadon, lavender, and deep green. The neck and foot are finished in a stippled black glaze, adding contrast to the intricate decoration, while the interior and base are glazed in bright turquoise—a classic touch in French Majolica from this period. The surface has a slightly undulating texture beneath the glaze, enhancing its hand-finished appeal. This piece was likely produced in one of the renowned French ceramic centers such as Choisy-le-Roi or Sarreguemines. An expressive example of Art Nouveau naturalism, it would add visual impact to a console or mantel and can stand alone as a sculptural object.
