French Midcentury Vase Signed Elchinger, circa 1950

About

Beautiful earthenware vase with enameled decorations of orange-red pastilles placed on a background ranging from white to anthracite gray and blue speckled. The interior of the vase is also enameled black. It dates from the 1950s and is signed Elchinger - France. Fernand Elchinger (1911-1975) took over his family's ceramic business in 1936, developed and modernized the plant and built a second in 1975 on another site. He installed the first six-pass continuous electric furnace in France and thus industrialized a faience production. He especially strengthened the manufacture of the ceramic saturator becoming the leading manufacturer in Europe. Driven by the craze for Vallauris ceramics, the Alsatian manufacture knew a strong notoriety with its productions of the years 1950-1960. These achievements, vases and pitchers with clean forms, were distinguished from the exuberant achievements of the workshops of the South. One minor slip of the hand when crafted, see photos, detail is on the rim. Measures: Diameter 10.63 inches x Height 10.13 inches
