Gilded Japanese Red Porcelain Vase by Contemporary Master Artist

About the Item

Exceptional large Japanese porcelain vase uniquely gilded in platinum inside, and hand-painted intricately hand painted in red on outside of the strikingly shaped body, a masterpiece by widely respected master porcelain artist of the Imari-Arita region of Japan. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain – a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. A seamless fish scale pattern expressed in iron-red and intricate gold details decorate the outer surface of this large vase, while the inner surface exhibits a mixture of smooth and matte gilding. Fan-shaped panels with sho-chiku-Bai or friends of winter pattern are gracefully positioned on the outer surfaces to represent different seasons. Sho-Chiku-Bai consists of plum blossom, pine tree and bamboo, symbolizing strength, endurance and grace. It is a beloved theme and has been extensively used in Japanese art and literature for centuries. This stunning red porcelain vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 14.5 in, D 8.5 in “Fired-on gold,” his signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome over glaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings.

Japanese Porcelain Dragon Glazed Vase Mazuku Kozan
By Makuzu Kozan
Located in Atlanta, GA
A porcelain vase with dragon motif by Japanese imperial potter Makuzu Kozan (1842-1916), circa 1900s. The vase is made in what is considered early phase of his underglaze period during late Meiji era. In a classic elongated baluster form, the surface of the vase was decorated in an unusual pink mist on a white and aubergine background (called Morotai, the Hazy style), on which a flying dragon is showcased on the center. The dragon was outlined in iron red and filled with the aubergine color and was artistically emphasized on its bulging eyes, claws, scales and a long tail. It was the sole focus of the design circumventing the entire body of the vase. The imagery calls in mind the dragon decoration found in Korean...
