About the Item
The Giustiniani factory was founded in 1775 in Naples by Nicola Giustiniani known as Bel Pensiero, founder of a famous family of Neapolitan ceramists.
Like many Neapolitan factories, the Giustiniani factory found its greatest source of inspiration in the Greco-Roman decorative samples found in nearby Pompeii. Following the first excavations, geometric motifs and mosaics were discovered from which the Neapolitan factories took inspiration for the production of their samples. These artefacts were intended for the creation of fine floor carpets.
However, the factory is particularly known for the manufacture of classical-style clay vases.
However, these ceramics inspired by pieces from the classical age are also associated with ceramics reminiscent of Egyptian taste made in the same period. The main characteristic of this typology is the combination between a distinct design and the simple and sinuous shapes of the pottery.
As in this splendid and precious vase, these elements are synthesized by a chalice-shaped biscuit crater decorated on both sides with sacred scenes in black, embellished with two lateral handles decorated with Pharaoh's heads.
Brand 'G' engraved on the base.
Really excellent condition despite its age.
