About the Item

Extraordinary contemporary Japanese decorative porcelain vase, intricately hand painted in the artist's unique miniature technique on a elegantly shaped porcelain body in gray, blue and red, with extremely intricate patterns and extensive use of gold, creating a beautiful palette with layers of transparent colors that can only be achieved by the old elaborate technique used in this piece. This piece is a masterpiece by highly acclaimed master porcelain artist and recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and unique gold and platinum work on porcelain. This old technique that combines different elements of extremely intricate painting, with colors and depth that create a pallet that is flawlessly organic and makes the viewer wonder about the sequence of the artist’s work on this piece. The technique involves numerous challenges at different stages of painting as well as firing. For this reason and the enormous amount of time needed to create one piece, this technique is rarely used by today’s porcelain artists. The artist’s profile is available upon request. Dragon is an imaginary animal believed to be a sacred beast belonging to the heavenly world and is said to have supernatural power living in the water and flying in the air on clouds. The dragon pattern has been very popular in Japan since Heian period and has been depicted by artists in paintings, lacquereware and ceramics. It is an auspicious pattern that is said to bring good fortune and success. The vase showcases a dense mosaic of extremely intricate patterns created by finely drawn lines of gold. This produces a stunning dream-like illusion of a “transparent” canvas showcasing a dramatic scene of dragon described in extraordinary detail. The stunning scalloped pattern appearing around the top of the vase adds another layer of elegance to this unique piece. This elegant porcelain vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 11 in, D 7.5 in.

Japanese Porcelain Dragon Glazed Vase Mazuku Kozan
By Makuzu Kozan
Located in Atlanta, GA
A porcelain vase with dragon motif by Japanese imperial potter Makuzu Kozan (1842-1916), circa 1900s. The vase is made in what is considered early phase of his underglaze period during late Meiji era. In a classic elongated baluster form, the surface of the vase was decorated in an unusual pink mist on a white and aubergine background (called Morotai, the Hazy style), on which a flying dragon is showcased on the center. The dragon was outlined in iron red and filled with the aubergine color and was artistically emphasized on its bulging eyes, claws, scales and a long tail. It was the sole focus of the design circumventing the entire body of the vase. The imagery calls in mind the dragon decoration found in Korean...
