About the Item

Exceptional Japanese contemporary highly collectible decorative porcelain vase, hand painted in extremely intricate patterns and extensive gold details on vibrant red, yellow, blue/gray and green on a stunningly shaped porcelain body, featuring the auspicious “dragon” motif. This is a signature masterpiece from an exclusive collection of exquisite pieces by widely acclaimed master porcelain artist and recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and unique gold and platinum work on porcelain. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain, a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. The artist's profile is available upon request. The old elaborate technique showcased on this piece combines different elements of extremely intricate painting that showcases a dense mosaic of extremely intricate patterns created by finely drawn lines of gold and produces a mesmerizing dream-like illusion of a “transparent” canvas, creating a beautiful palette with layers of transparent colors and depth that are flawlessly organic and make the viewer wonder about the sequence of the artist’s work on this piece. The technique involves numerous challenges at different stages of painting as well as firing. For this reason and the enormous amount of time needed to create one piece, this technique is rarely used by today’s porcelain artists. The artist’s profile is available upon request. This stunning piece dramatically showcases two extremely intricately hand-painted dragons, one in red and the other one in yellow, facing each other, set against an exquisite background of a dense mosaic of extremely fine and intricate drawing with gold on gradations of a stunning blue/gray creating a striking scene. To add to the elegance of the whole piece, the base and neck are decorated in a rich palette of blue, red and black, enhanced by the generous use of gold showcasing striking pheonixes. The entire reverse side of the vase is decorated with an extremely intricate pattern finely painted in blue/gray and gold, surrounding the artist's signature. “Fired-on gold,” the artist's signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings. The artist's profile is available upon request. This extraordinary hand painted vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 13 in D 13.5 in.

Antique Japanese Meiji Period Kutani Porcelain Vase by Shoundo / Matsumoto Sahei
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A fine antique Japanese Meiji period Kutani porcelain vase. By Matsumoto Sahei/Shoundo. In an aka-e style decorated throughout in iron red with extensive gilt accents. There are cartouches to either side both with branches of red flower with a backdrop of clouds on a white ground. With 2 figural dragon finial handles. Marked to the base with '九谷松雲堂製' which translates as 'Made by Shoundo of Kutani' Matsumoto Sahei (1851-1918) was a master potter who enjoyed success & recognition during his era. In 1876, Sahei received the artist name Shoundo from the nanga painter Tokuda Kansho - he would use that title for nearly 20 years until passing it onto his son as his successor in 1893. Sahei also has the distinction of taking Tokuda Yasokichi I as an apprentice when the latter was 17-years-old. The Tokuda family is perhaps one of the most famous families of Japanese ceramics: Yasokichi I is credited with revitalizing the lost art of ko-Kutani and Yasokichi I, II, & III were all recognized as "Living National Treasures" during their lifetimes. Shoundo exhibited internationally numerous times at the tail end of the 19th Century. The Keisei Isogaya Museum of Art (which specializes in Meiji Kutani) has a vase of Sahei's that was exhibited in the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. He is listed as exhibiting a wide variety of porcelain goods at the 1878, 1889, and 1900 Paris World Exhibitions. He is also listed as exhibiting 'incense burners & porcelain' at the World's Columbian Exhibition held in 1893 in Chicago. The pair of vases that Sahei exhibited in Paris in 1900 bear a strong resemblance to this pair. Simply a wonderfully rare Japanese porcelain...
