Japanese Contemporary Purple Red Porcelain Vase by Master Artist, 4
About the Item
Extraordinary Japanese contemporary museum-quality signed decorative porcelain vase, stunningly hand-painted in purple and red on a beautifully shaped rectangular body with a unique interpretation of the rhinoceros, a masterpiece by widely respected master porcelain artist from the historic Kutani region of Japan. The artist has drawn on various animals featured in Buddhist scriptures and religious practice to make his lifework the re-creation of a “Buddhist menagerie.” This piece is inspired by the Rhinoceros Sutra, an early Buddhist text that extols the virtues of solitary and ascetic life as exemplified by the rhinoceros.
This striking rectangular porcelain vase was crafted by fusing and firing thick, hand-formed sheets of porcelain clay. The artist celebrates the subtle asymmetry of the vase and accentuates it by unevenly shaving the neck and base portions, a technique made possible by the unusual thickness of the hand-formed sheets. The asymmetrical configuration results in a complex form that entertains the viewer at every corner of the piece.
Depicted here is the single-horned Indian rhinoceros with thickly folded skin that gives it its exaggerated armoured appearance. The stubby legs and wart-like bumps that cover the body are also characteristic features of the Asian species. The rhinoceros is shown looking intently at a bamboo sprout (another reference to the Rhinoceros Sutra) with humanlike eyes that convey an eerie sense of self-awareness.
This exquisite hand painted porcelain vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist.
Dimensions: H 13 in, 5.5 in, 5.5 in.
A few lines from the first part of the Rhinoceros Sutra (Khaggavisana Sutta) follow.
Renouncing violence for all living beings, harming not even a one… Wander alone like a rhinoceros.
In society, there are allurements, and on the heel of allurements, pain… Wander alone like a rhinoceros.
Like a bamboo sprout be un-entangled… Wander alone like a rhinoceros.
As a deer in the wilds, unfettered, forages wherever it wants, the wise person values freedom.
Wander alone like a rhinoceros.
(Adopted from translation from Pali by Thanissaro Bhikku).

Japanese Porcelain Dragon Glazed Vase Mazuku Kozan
By Makuzu Kozan
Located in Atlanta, GA
A porcelain vase with dragon motif by Japanese imperial potter Makuzu Kozan (1842-1916), circa 1900s. The vase is made in what is considered early phase of his underglaze period during late Meiji era. In a classic elongated baluster form, the surface of the vase was decorated in an unusual pink mist on a white and aubergine background (called Morotai, the Hazy style), on which a flying dragon is showcased on the center. The dragon was outlined in iron red and filled with the aubergine color and was artistically emphasized on its bulging eyes, claws, scales and a long tail. It was the sole focus of the design circumventing the entire body of the vase. The imagery calls in mind the dragon decoration found in Korean...
