About the Item

Mesmerizing contemporary Japanese decorative porcelain vase, hand-painted in extremely intricate patterns and extensive use of gold on vibrant green and red on a stunning bottle shaped porcelain body. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain, a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. This is a signature masterpiece from an exclusive collection of highly collectible pieces by widely acclaimed master porcelain artist and recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and unique gold and platinum work on porcelain. The artist's profile is available upon request. It features the auspicious Mount Fuji and cherry blossom motif. Mount Fuji with its majestic presence is very revered in Japan and is a sacred site in the Shinto religion. It has been designated as a World Heritage site. Since the Edo period (1603-1868) many artists have depicted Mount Fuji in their art, from laquerware and paintings to ukio-e or woodblock print, which was the most popular art form for the middle class in the Edo period. Katsushika Hokusai’s woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (1830-32) is probably the most popular and well known. Boasting the mountain’s steadfast solidness in the face of the vicissitudes of nature, the series depicts Fujisan (Mount Fuji) in different settings, different seasons from showcasing it surrounded by stunning cherry blossoms or covered with snow. His message is that things come and go but Fuji is steadfastly there, a metaphor for life that is steady as the conditions of life change. This old elaborate technique combines different elements of extremely intricate painting that showcases a dense mosaic of extremely intricate patterns created by finely drawn lines of gold and produces a mesmerizing dream-like illusion of a “transparent” canvas, creating a beautiful palette with layers of transparent colors and depth that are flawlessly organic and make the viewer wonder about the sequence of the artist’s work on this piece. The technique involves numerous challenges at different stages of painting as well as firing. For this reason and the enormous amount of time needed to create one piece, this technique is rarely used by today’s porcelain artists. The artist’s profile is available upon request. A dramatic scalloped panel showcases a dense mosaic of extremely intricate patterns in vivid red, soft pink and gold to create this mesmerizing Mount Fuji motif. An extremely fine brush is used to apply gold on the entire body of this piece on a vivid green background to create a fascinating intricate pattern. The entire reverse side of the vase is decorated with an extremely intricate pattern finely painted in the same vivid green and gold, surrounding the artist's signature. This exquisite hand-painted vase comes in a custom-made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 12 in, D 7.5 in. About the artist: “Fired-on gold,” the artist's signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings. The artist's profile is available upon request.
