About the Item

Japanese Meiji Period Koransha Olive Green & Gold Glaze Porcelain Vase, Ca. 1880 DIMENSIONS Height: 4.5 inches Diameter: 5 inches ABOUT Meiji Period (1868–1912) Koransha Porcelain Dragon Vase, finely crafted in an ovoid form and decorated with a gray dragon and swirling clouds in underglaze charcoal. An accomplished example of fine Japanese porcelain. Koransha porcelain refers to high-quality Japanese porcelain produced by the Koransha Company (香蘭社, Kōransha), one of Japan's oldest and most prestigious porcelain manufacturers. It is especially known for its elegant and refined wares, often made in the Arita region of Kyushu — the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. Key Facts About Koransha Porcelain: • Founded: In 1879 by Fukagawa Eizaemon, though its roots trace back to the 17th century. • Location: Arita, Saga Prefecture, Japan. • Famous for: Combining traditional Arita techniques with refined designs for both domestic use and export. • Style: Known for delicate shapes, precise painting, and motifs like dragons, phoenixes, flowers, and classical Japanese scenery. • Royal Patronage: Koransha was once appointed a purveyor to the Imperial Household and participated in international exhibitions in the late 19th century. Koransha pieces from the Meiji period (1868–1912) are particularly collectible, as they showcase the firm's high craftsmanship and Japan’s efforts to appeal to Western markets during that era.
