Kınık Küpü (Textured Turkish Stew Pot - Small) 1009

About the Item

This small Turkish stew pot was traditionally used for cooking hearty meals over an open flame or in an oven. The pot's deep, round body and sturdy handles are functional design elements common to Anatolian cookware. This unique piece features a painted motif below its rim and splashes of color on its body. Kınık, a traditional Anatolian pottery technique that blends control and chance to create one-of-a-kind designs on the surface of each piece. Using an ox horn while the clay is still wet, the Kınık artist drips green, red, and black paint (derived from local minerals: black from crushed stone, green from chrome oxide, red from iron oxide) over each küp while it spins on the potter’s wheel, as gravity pulls the colors down into surprising, distinctive designs. A staple in both daily meals and holidays, stew holds a deep culinary and cultural significance in Turkish culture. In Turkish, food is often celebrated in sayings and expressions, highlighting its importance in everyday life. If someone is praised for their skill in cooking, you might hear, “Güveçte pişmiş” (cooked in a stew pot), indicating that their talent has been cultivated to perfection. And when complimenting a dish, you might simply say, “Güveç gibi” (like a stew), signifying that it embodies the richness and depth of flavors that a traditional Turkish stew pot can create. In the mountain village of Kınık, in the region of Bilecik, there are 75 wood-fired kilns and pottery workshops attached to over 300 white-washed cottages. Turkish families pass down the Kınık craft with pride and precision. The mesmerizing, marbled effect of intricate swirls echoes the dynamic interplay of land and sea found along the Marmara coastline. *One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago. This item is now intended for decorative use only.
