About the Item

Kurt Ekholm was one of the most important persons in the early days of Arabia and, by extension, the Finnish art industry. He studied ceramic design at Tekniska Skolan (now Konstfack) in Stockholm, where he gained an internship under Gunnar Nylund, art director at Rorstrand, and became more modernist. He became increasingly oriented towards modernism. After graduating in 1931, he returned to Finland and joined Arabia as a designer, from 1932 as art director and from 1933 as head of the Art Department, a position he held until 1948. As a designer, he pioneered functionalist tableware at Arabia, designing the AH model in 1935 and the AR model in 1936, which later inspired Kaj Franck to create the Kilta series. As a ceramicist, he also exhibited his work, including solo exhibitions, but from around 1937 he gradually moved behind the scenes to manage his administrative duties as art director and to run the Art Department, which he had established with his own enthusiasm and hard work. He organised numerous exhibitions in the Nordic countries, introducing Finnish arts, crafts and design, including works by artists from Arabia's art department, as well as promoting exchange and solidarity with the Nordic countries as a stepping stone towards global expansion. He is also responsible for the museum, which opened in 1948 and is still located on the ninth floor of the Arabia building. This is a unique piece of vase he produced in 1931, before the establishment of the art department. It is an abstract landscape piece, created soon after he joined Arabia, due to the synergy between the shading of the unevenness caused by the series of grooves on the sides and the gradation of the multiple brown glazes that were brushed on at random. Kurt Ekholm art pieces are few in number and extremely valuable.

Toini Muona (1904-1987) was one of the most respected art ceramists and trendsetters in Finnish ceramic art and art industry in the 1930s–1950s. Her artworks represent clean modern reduced forms and motives taken from finnish nature. Toini Muona studied sketch drawing at the Central School of Fine Arts from 1923 to 1926 and postgraduate ceramics from 1926 to 1923. In the meantime, she worked as a textile designer at Atelier Vigli from 1929 to 1931, then moved to the Arabian Art Department, where she worked until 1970.
