About the Item

This is a ceramic figure of a Japanese tanuki (狸 – raccoon dog), a well-known creature from Japanese folklore. These figures are considered symbols of good fortune, prosperity, and playfulness, often placed outside homes, restaurants, or shops to attract luck and customers. The Tanuki is holding a Folding fan (sensu) in right paw. This type of figure is most commonly associated with Shigaraki ware or Otagaki ware, traditional Japanese ceramic styles. These tanuki figures became especially popular in the late 19th to mid-20th century, often made for decorative or spiritual purposes. This particular piece is most probably early to mid 20th century. They are usually seen: Outside shops to invite customers In gardens or homes for good luck With attributes like the fan, sake bottle, and round belly, each representing a folklore trait (wealth, trickery, transformation, joy) Just some ware and some small crackle lines.
