About the Item

Exquisite Japanese contemporary ko-Imari (old Imari) style hand-painted decorative porcelain vase in green, red and blue , a signed masterpiece by widely acclaimed master porcelain artist of Imari-Arita region of Japan and the recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and his unique gold and platinum work on porcelain. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. Sho-chiku-bai, an extremely popular combination of pine, bamboo and plum blossom is considered to be a symbol of longevity, nobility. Pine and bamboo which endure wind and cold and keep green, and plum blossoming before other plants. The design has a cultural significance and has found its way into Japanese literature, pottery and Noh and Kabuki plays, among other art forms. A geometric pattern in which waves are drawn in a fan-like shape and alternately stacked represents the wish for a peaceful life that will last forever, like a wave that is constantly repeated in the ever-expanding ocean. Peacock has been loved in Japan for a long time, only being introduced to Japan by Chinese art and literature. Because of its graceful feathers and stunning colors, it became the symbol of extravagance. This exquisite very large gilded hand painted decorative porcelain vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 14 in, D 12.5 in “Fired-on gold,” the artist's signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as 5-10 firings. The artist's profile is available upon request.
