About the Item

An elegant Japanese bronze bud vase dating to the late Meiji period (circa early 20th century), notable for its refined proportions and sculptural detail. The form combines a rounded, bulbous base with a narrow neck and slightly everted rim, flanked by two vertical zoomorphic handles, each cast in the shape of a stylized mythical animal—likely shishi or komainu, symbols of protection. The main body is ornamented with a continuous frieze of raised medallion motifs, each depicting abstracted floral and symbolic designs rendered in low relief. The vase stands 18 cm tall with a diameter of 8.5 cm. This piece displays a rich dark brown patina with light verdigris around the foot, and surface wear consistent with age. It remains in good antique condition, with minor scratches and oxidation expected of a piece of this age and material. A compelling example of Japanese bronze metalwork from the late 19th to early 20th century, ideal for collectors of Meiji period artifacts, Asian decorative arts, or historic miniature vases.
