Meiji Fukagawa Gilded Porcelain Vase, Wave Ground & Enameled Medallions, C. 1900

About the Item

Meiji Period Fukagawa Gilded Porcelain Vase with Wave Ground and Enameled Medallions, Japan, Circa 1900 A superb Meiji-period Japanese porcelain vase attributed to the esteemed Fukagawa studio, dating circa 1900. Standing 13 inches high with an 8.5-inch diameter, this richly enameled and gilded baluster-form vase exemplifies the meticulous craftsmanship and refined aesthetic for which Fukagawa is celebrated. The surface is entirely covered in an intricate swirling wave ground (nami) executed in fine gilt, a visual metaphor for the eternal rhythm of nature and spiritual continuity. Scattered across this dynamic background are multi-colored medallions—each rendered in cloisonné-style enamel and outlined in fine gold. Motifs include stylized chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, peonies, and lotus rosettes, representing seasonal beauty, imperial symbolism, and spiritual purity. One prominent painted roundel features a traditional landscape vignette: serene figures beneath a maple tree beside a flowing river, framed by jagged mountains—echoing the ideal of poetic retreat in harmony with nature. A striking red and gold brocade border encircles the neck and foot, further evoking the decorative elegance of Meiji-period porcelain intended for connoisseur and export markets alike. Dimensions: 13” H x 8.5” diameter Base: 5.25” diameter Condition: Excellent antique condition with minimal wear to gilding and enamel. No visible cracks or restorations. Unglazed footring with expected age patina. Attribution: Unmarked, but stylistically and technically consistent with Fukagawa workshop production during the late Meiji period, ca. 1890–1910.
