About the Item

Very striking, hand made and mouth blown in Italy, mid-century Murano art glass sommerso vetro curving vase in vibrant shades of aqua blue color with rich golden yellow center. The word "sommerso" means submerged which involves submerging a blown glass article in a crystal clear molten glass of a different color. This technique was started in the 1930's by Carlo Scarpa. Murano sculptures with color are twice as expensive and more sought after then the all clear ones because the technique of doing so can only be done by a very experienced master glass blower. This looks like the work of artist Alfredo Barbini, but not being sold as his. Barbini was famous for the retro sommerso technique and I have seen a similar looking vase like this being sold as his. This is a very heavy vase and is in very good pre-owned estate condition. The vase measures approximately 10" tall x 7.5" wide x 3" deep. Century old Murano glass from Italy is world renowned for its' appearance, elegance and beauty. Each piece of Murano glass, brings with itself the history and enchanting beauty of Italy. Glassmaking has been in existence since the 10th century in Venice and has been operating continuously ever since. Glass was one of the Renaissance’s most wished for treasures and at one point in history, was an extremely luxurious and valuable commodity available only to the most wealthy. Glassmakers were considered “royalty” and enjoyed several privileges. They could wear swords and enjoyed immunity from prosecution. The daughters of glassmakers were allowed to marry into Venice’s blue-blooded families. Italian glass products were highly priced in the Middle Ages and were predominantly responsible for the power and wealth of the Venetian people. The glassmakers of Murano are truly "The Masters". They blow exceptionally fine forms and objects, using only a few tools. To refine the form of Murano glass, the glassblower sits in the special “glassmaker’s chair,” with extended arms, to support the blowpipe.
