About the Item

These beautiful Mennecy porcelain soft-paste pomade jars were hand-painted in the 18th century, circa 1765. They are rare. Jars like this would have been placed on the vanity of an aristocratic lady. Both the body and the cover have lovely spiral fluting. They are decorated with flowers painted in exquisite pastel colors, especially the distinctive purple-rose hue seen on the body and the cover. Each cover is topped with a fabulous strawberry finial. The underside of both jars is marked with the Mennecy mark, an incised "DV." Dimensions. height 3.75 inches x diameter 2.35 inches Condition: Excellent Price: $1,700 Background of Mennecy Porcelain: The Mennecy Porcelain factory was one of the first French porcelain factories. From 1735 until 1773, the factory produced fine-quality soft-paste porcelain. French soft-paste porcelain began with the early attempts by European potters to replicate Chinese porcelain using mixtures of clay and glass frit. Like our jars, the porcelain body of the early Mennecy wares has a creamy one. By royal decree, the only porcelain factory in 18th-century France that used gilding was the royal factory, Sèvres. So, there was no gilding at Mennecy; instead, the rims were painted in purple or pink. The Mennecy factory, under the protection of the Duc de Villeroy, marked an incised "DV," his mark, on the underside of many pieces.

Pair Creamware Vases 18th Century English with Turquoise Trim Circa 1780
By Neale & Co.
Located in Katonah, NY
WHY WE LOVE IT: One of our absolute favorites! A pair of 18th-century creamware flower holders complete with stands and covers made in England by Neale & Co. was one of the finest 18th century English potteries. The entire composition is classically elegant. The flower holders are decorated with turquoise swags and delicately painted flowers. The tops are pierced for flower stems. The handles are made in a pair of entwined snakes painted in turquoise with bright red mouths. This flower holder could be used with the tops for individual stems or without the tops for a bouquet. All parts of the set have survived and remained together for the past 200 years. History of Creamware: Creamware is the name given to a type of earthenware pottery made from cream-colored clays from Dorset and Devonshire combined with calcined flint. Creamware was first produced in England sometime before 1740. Foremost of the pioneers of creamware in the Staffordshire Potteries was Thomas Whieldon. He produced a wide variety of creamware. The young Josiah Wedgwood was in partnership with Thomas Whieldon from 1754-1759. When Wedgwood left to set up his own business, he immediately directed his efforts to develop creamware. Many of the Staffordshire Potteries, especially Neale & Co., learned from Whieldon and Wedgwood and developed their own excellent creamware products. Dated: 1795 to 1810 Hanley Staffordshire...

Located in Katonah, NY
Both jars are hand-painted in traditional Imari designs. They feature beautiful waterside scenes painted in cobalt blue and two shades of iron red, all with gilded accents. The colors are vibrant, and the scenes are complex. One jar features a shoreline, while the other scene features a cresting wave. Above the main scenes on each jar, there are medallions adorned with gilded floral decorations. Additionally, a ring of patterns inspired by Japanese textiles encircles the shoulder and base of each jar. The hand-painted panels on the reverse side mirror the designs on the front but include many subtle variations. On the side of each jar, there is a classic Imari depiction of a vase set on a garden terrace. These exquisite pieces were crafted in Japan during the Meiji Period, around 1880. Dimensions: 15" tall x 7" diameter at the widest point Condition: Excellent. Price: $2,800 Background of Late Imari Porcelain: Imari porcelains were first exported from Japan to Europe in the 17th century.
