Per Weiss Colossal / Large Glazed Stoneware Floor Vase with Geometric Pattern

About the Item

An impressive, colossal floor vase crafted in glazed stoneware, featuring organic, geometric patterns both in the glaze and in relief. The labyrinth-like pattern adds striking depth to the surface. The glaze is in beautiful shades of light red, brown, and blue, subtly shifting with the light—a hallmark of Per Weiss' unique style. Purchased directly from Per Weiss by the previous owner around 1990, the vase remains in perfect condition. Per Weiss stamp on the rim. Denmark approx. 1990 Per Weiss (1953-2023) was a renowned Danish ceramic artist, educated at the School of Applied Arts and under Japanese master potter Yosiga Taibi. From 1979 to 1986, Weiss operated his own workshop, Weiss Gama, in Japan, where he became the first Westerner to be accepted into the prestigious Nitten exhibition of the Japanese Academy. Weiss' ceramics are known for their monumental scale, often featuring large hand-thrown vessels with intricate organic and geometric patterns, both glazed and in relief. His use of color is equally remarkable, ranging from warm earthy tones like red, brown, and ochre, to cooler shades of blue, creating a harmonious contrast and depth in his works. His glazes subtly shift with the light, adding a dynamic quality to his pieces. Weiss masterfully blended Japanese ceramic tradition with his own developed raku technique, resulting in a truly unique artistic expression. His ability to balance the monumental and powerful with refined, intricate detail made his works both striking and sophisticated. His pieces have been exhibited in museums around the world.
