About the Item

Rare bud vase by Patricia Esche is an important example of early American studio glass movement. It is stylistically similar to her blue vase with ruffled rim that is displayed as a part of "There at the beginning: Early Studio Glass from the Parkman Collection" by Corning Museum of Glass. Stripes of fused glass in dark, jewel-like green color showcase the fluid, organic shape of the vase, while light gradations of color and some controlled bubbles help convey the density and the structure of the glass. The vase is signed and dated by the artist on the bottom. Patricia Esch (b. 1940) attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where she received a BA in Design in 1963. She then studied under Harvey Littleton at the University of Wisconsin until 1965. Afterwards, she moved to Colorado and set up a studio in Denver; she was described as "The only woman glassblower within at least 800 miles of Denver" in the local newspaper. In 1973, Esch was honored by the American Association of University of Women. She had been a visiting craftsperson at Colorado State University and at Chadron State College in Nebraska. Esch was a studio glass artist until 1974, when she sold her equipment and returned to Wisconsin to pursue other creative avenues; she continues to make art glass as a hobby, and her work has been exhibited around the world.
