Small Mid-Century Vase or Vessel by Hans Hedberg, Sweden

About the Item

A small stoneware vase by the highly-regarded Swedish ceramicist Hans Hedberg (1917 - 2007). Glazed to the outside in grey-black with green-blue highlights; the grey-black glaze continues inside. The piece is in good vintage condition, with minor age-appropriate signs of wear and asymmetry from the hand-making process. Signed to the base. Approximate dimensions H 9cm W 12cm D 7cm Hedberg spent much of his working life in Biot, near Vallauris, in the south of France. Picasso, Léger and Cocteau visited his studio; Chagall was a student. Hedberg produced a wide body of work, but is most well-known for his large sculptures of fruit, particularly large pumpkins and eggs with beautiful natural mottled glazes. A museum dedicated to him was opened in 1998 in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden.
