About the Item
This stunning 1960s modernist, hand-crafted design studio piece was designed by Hans Welling for the West German pottery studio Ceramano. It is part of the so called "Ceralux" collection. The simple but elegant (and large) cylinder form of this particular piece is an excellent canvas for an experimental decor. The stunning, shiny red-glazed surface is embellished by a ring of horizontally placed clay cylinders in different diameters. The result is a naturally arranged relief pattern. The edge of each individual cylinder is highlighted with black glaze. To further enhance the decor, there is a contrasting drip glaze effect in vivid orange below the relief ring on top of the red glaze. The inside of the planter/vase is glazed dark green.
The base of the planter/vase is numbered "110" and further signed "Ceralux, Ceramano, W.Germany, Handarbeit" (see photo).
Ceramano was founded in 1959 in Ransbach-Baumbach by Jakob Schwaderlapp, who also founded Jasba. Ceramano was established as an art ceramic factory producing more artistic and experimental forms alongside the more mass-produced Jasba items. Ceramano items are generally of a high quality and more varied nature. Many vase bases are hand marked and frequently include decor names such as Ceralux. Hans Welling served as artistic director for Ceramano in the early 1960s, with many of the famous Ceremano shapes and decors being ascribed to him. Ceramano close its doors in 1989.
In good vintage condition. The plater/vase has a little crack in the upper rim (very hard to detect, can hardly not be seen on the photo). There are two small chips missing in the relief decor (see photos) but since the clay is dark, the chips blend in well with the rest. The planter/vase has minor imperfections in the glaze (see photos) that originate from the production process itself (air-bubbles in the glaze). There are other very minor signs of wear on the surface consistent with age (see photos) No repairs or alterations have have been made.
Dimension: height 32.5 cm/ 12 1/2", diameter top and base 21 cm/ 8 1/4", diameter with relief motif 24 cm/ 9 1/2".
