About the Item
This is an exceptionally fine Lancaster, Pennsylvania Sack Back Windsor Armchair, circa 1780. It has a bowed crest rail mortised into a continuous rear rail with eleven spindles, seven of which are full height. The continuous rail terminates in carved knuckle two-piece handholds above baluster and ring turned arm supports. All over an elliptical seat with carved gutter and a prominent pommel, the whole supported by four baluster, ring and socket legs, terminating in blunt arrow feet all joined by beautifully turned baluster and ring medial stretcher. The surface consists of several layers of old black paint.
Lancaster chairs of this quality are extremely rare. Furthermore, fully articulated rear legs are uncommon on these Lancaster chairs.
