Pennsylvania Dower Chest with drawers and tombstone panels

About the Item

This dower chest is made of pine and poplar with the original painted finish. The pine case is sponge decorated in salmon with three blue sponged tombstone panels across the front above the sponge drawers outlined in a salmon and black diamond border. It is in beautiful condition with excellent structure and surface condition and original brass handles as well as the crab lock and key. A number of these chests by this decorator have survived but fewer with three drawers and the stepped base on cut-out bracket feet. Some of the other surviving chests are pictured in Monroe Fabian's book The Pennsylvania German Decorated Chest. This chest is one of the most aesthetically pleasing.
