About the Item

Carved from natural alder wood, this mask depicts a vampire and is typically worn by villagers during the Entrudo festivities. Known as one of Portugal's most traditional Carnivals, the Entrudo of Lazarim boasts an ancient history, surviving even the repressive period of the dictatorship, which tried but failed to eradicate this pagan and subversive ritual. Each mask, meticulously crafted by local artisans from alder trees that grow along the Varosa River, is unique and symbolizes the cultural imagination and universe of the community. No two masks are alike, and each intricate detail is a testament to the artisans' skill, with every pattern holding its own recognized intellectual property. This piece is not just a mask but a work of art, embodying the enduring spirit and traditions of Lazarim.
