About the Item

Rare Venetian First Grand Tour Carnival Figure of a Young Girl, Paint Decorated Metal, Late 18th c. The Carnival in Venice traces its origins to 1162, when Venetians celebrated a military victory over the Patriarch of Aquileia with feasts, music, and dancing. By the 18th century, the festival reached its peak, becoming a symbol of decadence, mystery, and revelry. Masked figures roamed the streets, blurring the lines between social classes and allowing people to indulge in extravagant festivities without revealing their identities. Venetian Carnival celebrant figures are rare especially a young girl in painted metal. Trent Antiques has been a respected name in antiques for over 35 years with a large collection of period furniture, art, books, jewelry and decorative accessories.
