About the Item

A rare, beautifully designed glass or ceramic form by famed midcentury American artist or potter Doyle Lane. Lane was a glaze specialist much like Glen Lukens and Otto Natzler. His colorful glazes would melt, bubble and crack over his pieces creating a very tactile look and feel. His work ranged from beaded necklaces and pendants to small, delicate vases or weed pots to ceramic sculptures, clay paintings, and large scale wall mosaics (including his most well-known work - an 18-foot mosaic or mural known as the orange wall which was commissioned by architect Welton Becket in 1964 for Mutual Savings & Loan offices in Pasadena, California. This work, which is signed or stamped by Lane on the underside (rare for these works from what we understand), comes from a larger collection of his works (please see the last photo). Again, very rare in scale and form. Lane's work is scarce and hard to find. Would be a great addition to any collectors of Lane's work or midcentury ceramics. Lane's work can be found in numerous collections and museums including: Los Angeles County Museum of Art Oakland Museum of California California African American Museum Smithsonian American Art Museum Huntington Library, San Marino Dimensions: 2.75" wide, 2.75" deep, .75" high.

German-born artist Josef Albers wonderfully designed Homage to the Square, four glazed Italian porcelain ceramic platters, chargers, plates, each hallmarked/stamped on verso, from a limited sold-out edition. Each platter comes in its original box and is based on Albers' 1954 original oil on masonite work. Albers is widely considered one of the most influential artists and teachers of the visual arts in the twentieth century. The platters were done in a limited edition run of 1500 in 1999 and quickly sold out. They were all made in Italy specifically for MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art).
