About the Item

A wonderful and rare/scarce wall relief sculpture by famed Los Angeles (Echo Park), California-based artist Peter Shire who was a founding member (along with Italian designer Ettore Sottsass and others) of The Memphis Group, an international design movement that came out of Italy during the 1980s (1980-1988), and specialized in postmodern furniture, lighting, fabrics, carpets, ceramics, glass, and metal objects. This beautifully decorated and glazed abstract sculpture (Shire at his whimsical best) is signed and dated (1981) by Shire on the top edge. Shire's sculptural works are becoming quite rare and scarce - especially his unique and one-of-a-kind pieces. The sculpture is attached to a wooden backing with holes for mounting. Would be a great addition to any post-modern ceramic or California Pottery collection or admirers of the Shire's work or eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Shire's work can be found in many prominent collections and museums including: Archer M. Huntington Gallery, Austin, Texas Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, New York Berkeley Museum, Berkeley, California Colburn Center for the Performing Arts, Los Angeles, California Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York Fresno Museum of Art, Fresno, California The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, Israel Judisches Museum, Frankfurt, Germany Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, California Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, California Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California Lucille Salter Packard Children’s Hospital, Stanford University, California Matthew Center Art Collection, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Mint Museum of Craft and Design, Charlotte, North Carolina Museum of Arts and Design, New York Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas Museum of Modern Art, Lodz, Poland Newport Art Museum, Newport Beach, California Oakland Museum of Art, Oakland, California Österreichisches Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna, Austria Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon Sak’s Fifth Avenue Corporation, New York San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, California San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, California Seattle Museum of Art, Seattle, Washington Skirball Museum, Los Angeles, California Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Total Contemporary Art Museum, Seoul, Korea Victoria and Albert Museum, London, United Kingdom Dimensions: 8" high, 12" wide, 2.75" deep.
