About the Item
First half of the 18th century, Castelli Manufacture
Liberation from chains
Majolica, 21 x 15 cm
Framed, 38 x 37 cm
Example of the ceramic manufacturing tradition of Castelli, a small town in the province of Teramo that distinguished itself between the 16th and 18th centuries for the production of majolica objects and decorations, although it has much older origins. Many were the families of artists who tried their hand at working with this material for several generations: the Gentili, the Fuina, and, above all, the Grue family, distinguished by the high number of members who took part in the activity of ceramists that had already concerned their family in previous centuries. The scene we can observe here shows a man sitting on the ground, around whom we can see broken chains; the other figure, also bearded and covered with a veil wrapped around his waist, stoops down to help the other man up by grabbing him by the arm. The episode seems reminiscent of the deliverance of Prometheus by Hercules, recounted in the lost tragedy of Aeschylus; other interpretations may involve the deliverance of a martyr by Christ or a metaphorical salvation of humankind from sin through the figure of the redeemer. The well-defined outline encloses intense, contrasting colors that fade into the chiaroscuro details of the bodies and the background, which is more undefined and stylized in detail than the two figures in the foreground.
