About the Item

Very rare, museum quality early 20th century American stitched leather "patent smoke protector" fireman helmet and/or head protector. The early respiratory apparatus was invented by William badger and Willis c. Vejen, of Indianapolis, ind., beginning in the 1880s. Several modifications and/or improvements were made by Badger and Valen well into the 20th century. The fireman's helmet is comprised of nicely worn hand-stitched chamois leather "specially prepared" so that fire, water, noxious gases and corrosive chemicals were equally without "injurious effect" upon it. The air supply for respiration was furnished from a compact compression tank or compressed air reservoir (having a pressure of 1oo pounds) attached to the back of the helmet (long since removed). The temperature secured by the escape of the air from its confined to normal pressure was typically twenty degrees lower than the temperature of the surrounding environment. The riveted joint, nickel-plated bronze eye pieces retain the original double mica lenses with intact revolving or rotary cleaners. The ear whole diaphragms were designed to transmit sound and serve as "side lights", when occasion presents, as the head is perfectly free to turn about inside the spacious helmet. Fabricated between 1900-1910 by the Vajen helmet co., Richardson, Indiana. The company produced fireman's respiratory equipment since its founding in 1881. The 1896 Vajen-bader catalog had the following description of the protector: “the wearer of the Vajen helmet can see through eye-pieces that were guarded by cross wires. Over his ears the plates of the helmet are constructed as to furnish him with an artificial tympanum, rendering his hearing even more distinct than natural. There is a whistle in the front bottom part of the helmet which is a means of calling and signaling. On top of the helmet there is a strong cushion protecting the head from falling debris. This helmet enables the firemen to venture into thick smoke without fear of suffocation.” The Vajen-Bader patent firemen's smoke protector was invented for the use of fire-fighters. It was built upon scientific principles and was considered of greater importance than the submarine diving Apparatus. With the use of this helmet a person was enabled to enter rooms filled with smoke or noxious gases without the slightest discomfort to the wearer. The protector was adopted by the fire departments of over one hundred of the largest cities, both in America and abroad. It was also used in the largest brewing establishments in the country, and by large miners and gas companies. The helmet was often tested before the many fire chiefs attending their annual conventions. The very few intact surviving examples are found in private collections and museums.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Leather is in great condition with some mire wears but no rips. Metal is lustrous and sturdy. Very good condition considering age.
