About the Item
Handcrafted Ceramic Tribal Mask – Signed “Atelier Manteln – BAKU 74” – Kuba/Songye Inspired
This unique ceramic mask is a striking and expressive piece of studio art, crafted in 1974 and signed by the maker: “Atelier Manteln – BAKU 74.” Strongly influenced by traditional African tribal masks—particularly from the Kuba and Songye peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo—this artwork blends bold geometry with vivid color and textural detail.
Hand-sculpted from terracotta clay and finished with a glossy glaze in deep reds and blacks, the mask features stylized almond-shaped eyes, a pronounced nose, and symmetrical perforations reminiscent of scarification marks seen in Central African tribal art. The flared lower border, decorated in alternating red and cream segments, echoes the ornamental collars often found in ceremonial masks.
