About the Item

19th Century 39 Star American Flag, circa 1889, a printed linen ensign with 39 stars arranged in a wavy star pattern, with stripes in a very unusual elongated form. This was never an official American flag but was made in the territory in anticipation of Dakota being admitted to the union in 1889 - it never came to pass and instead it was divided and admitted as two states. Mounted in a custom Bird's Eye Maple frame. The flag remains in very good condition with just a little color bleed into the white stripes.
