About the Item

"ROOSEVELT & GARNER", AN EMBROIDERED ARMBAND SUPPORTING THE 1932 DEMOCRAT PRESIDENTIAL TICKET AND THE REPEAL OF PROHIBITION Made for the 1932 Democratic presidential Campaign ticket, this embroidered armband supports the candidacy of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and running mate John Nance Garner. The repeal of prohibition was a major element of the Democratic platform and at least two styles of companion armbands are known with messages that support FDR’s Campaign promise. These include “Repeal & Roosevelt” and “Repeal 18th Amendment.” Made of blue felted wool, with white embroidered text, bound with a red blanket stitch and having red ties at each corner, this is an uncommonly beautiful textile from the first Campaign of our nation's only four-time president. Take particular note of the bold and attractive lettering. The tall and narrow font, with a slightly larger "R" and “G.” lend it an attractive appearance. The 18th Amendment effectively established the prohibition of alcoholic beverages by declaring production, transport, and the sale of alcohol (though not consumption or private possession) illegal, while the separate Volstead Act set down methods of enforcement. The amendment was ratified on January 16, 1919 and took effect on January 16, 1920. For the following 13 years Prohibition was officially in effect, though the ability to enforce it was limited by the Volstead Act and by corrupt and complacent politicians who overlooked illicit manufacturing and smuggling. It was repealed by Congress in 1933 through ratification of the Twenty-first Amendment, which represented the only instance in American history that a constitutional amendment was repealed in its entirety. Following congressional approval, Franklin Roosevelt issued Presidential Proclamation 2065, to officially end prohibition, on December 5, 1933. Mounting: The textile has been mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert staff. We take great care in the mounting and presentation of flags and related textiles and have preserved thousands of examples. The background fabric is 100% cotton twill, black in color. The cove shaped molding has a very dark brown finish, almost black, with red undertones and highlights. To this a black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding was added as a CAP. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass. Feel free to contact us for more details. Frame size (H x L): 13" x 28.75" Flag size (H x L): 3" x 16".

Commission Pennant with 13 Stars, like for Private Vessel, Ca 1892-1910
Located in York County, PA
Commission pennants are the distinguishing mark of a commissioned U.S. Navy ship. Flown at the topmast, the typical American format is a long blue field, usually with a single row of white stars, although sometimes with their total divided into two rows, followed by two long stripes, red-over-white. A ship became commissioned when this pennant was hoisted. Flown during both times of peace and war, the only time the pennant is not flown is if a flag officer or civilian official was aboard and replaced it with their own flag. Sometimes the owners of private ships mimicked the use of Navy signals. Some seafaring men would have served in the Navy and become privy to various practices in that capacity. Others flew them purely for stylistic reasons, either on a regular basis or while the boat was dressed for special occasion. Hudson River steamers regularly flew pennants of this nature, as evidenced by period photography as well as the paintings of artists such as John and James Bard...
