Antique 1890 Navajo Germantown Eyedazzler Rug in Red, Green, Yellow, Black

About the Item

This exceptional 19th-century Navajo Germantown rug is a vibrant example of Native American textile art from the late 1800s. Woven in a dazzling Eyedazzler pattern, the design features dynamic zigzags and geometric motifs in bold, saturated colors: red, green, yellow, black, and white. Handwoven by a Diné (Navajo) weaver, this textile was crafted using Germantown yarns—commercially dyed wool yarns produced in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and traded to Navajo artisans beginning in the 1860s. These fine, brightly colored yarns allowed for sharper detail and more vivid palettes than natural dyes, and quickly became a favorite among Navajo weavers seeking to experiment with bold new designs. Eyedazzler rugs like this one are highly collectible for their optical intensity, historical importance, and artistic sophistication, representing a moment when traditional Navajo weaving intersected with commercial trade and innovation in the late 19th century. This versatile textile is ideal for use as a wall hanging or tapestry, a statement throw, or an accent piece in a gallery, study, or curated interior. It can be displayed either vertically or horizontally, depending on your space and vision. The Diné (Navajo) are an Indigenous tribal nation native to the Southwestern United States, primarily in present-day Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Known globally for their advanced weaving traditions, the Navajo have passed down their artistry through generations of skilled artisans. A museum-worthy artifact of Native American craftsmanship and color mastery, this Germantown Eyedazzler rug remains in very good antique condition.
