About the Item

This exceptional Crow (Apsáalooke) beaded knife sheath, dating to circa 1870, is an outstanding artifact from the Classic Period of Native American artistry—prior to the Reservation era. Handcrafted by a Crow artisan, this sheath exemplifies the expert craftsmanship, cultural symbolism, and aesthetic sophistication of Plains Indian material culture. Constructed from native-tanned hide and richly adorned with intricate beadwork, the sheath features a striking palette of white, blue, and yellow trade beads in geometric patterns. A vibrant red trade cloth border enhances the visual contrast, while the hide has been hand-rubbed with red ochre, imparting a warm, earthy tone and ceremonial character. Two edge-beaded hide drops extend from the sheath, further emphasizing the Crow people's renowned skill in embellishment and design. The combination of texture, color, and craftsmanship captures the spirit of 19th-century Crow traditions and lifeways. Originally from the Great Lakes region, the Crow Nation migrated westward and settled across Montana, Wyoming, and the Yellowstone River Valley—territories deeply reflected in their material culture. This rare and well-preserved example remains in good condition, with vivid beadwork and original detailing still intact. It is a significant addition for serious collectors of Native American art, ethnographic artifacts, or Plains Indian beadwork. Authenticity is guaranteed.
