Antique European Folk Art Painted And Carved Nautical Shop Sign

About the Item

A large and colorful Folk Art carved and painted Shop Sign in the form of a sky gazing gentleman with folded arms. Strongly carved, the face conveying a trustworthy and slightly whimsical expression. With yellow hat and pronounced sideburns in keeping with 19th Century fashions, the gentleman wears a blue ship worthy jacket. The oval sign with rope surround declares that the business is,”’ A. Reed/ Ship’s Chandler and Victualler”. In Antique times, this business provided food and lighting (candles) the sea going vessels of the day whether at War or Peace and its business was literally a matter of life and death to the Sailors dependent on quality food and light during the sometimes years long voyages which gives meaning to the trustworthy expression of the carvings face.
