Diorama nautico in teca di legno e vetro dalla forma piramidale raffigurante mezzo scafo di una goletta a vele spiegate in legno battente bandiera inglese. 1 veliero, due piccoli pirovelieri e una barca a remi naufragata completano l’opera. Inghilterra primi del ‘900. Buono stato cornice con qualche mancanza e polvere all’interno della teca. Misure cm 84x12x41,5 – 33.1x4.7x16.3 inches.
Un diorama è un'ambientazione in scala ridotta che ricrea, in modo più possibile realistico, scene di vario genere, realizzati solitamente ad uso tecnico, soprattutto ingegneristico e architettonico (riproduzione di edifici, oggetti industriali e superfici), per scopi didattici o per hobby (modellismo).
Il modellismo navale nasce per motivi religiosi. Non contento della banalità della propria vita l’uomo ne vuole un’altra e per di più eterna, ma l’anima – per definizione immateriale – ha bisogno di un mezzo per raggiungere l’aldilà; deve attraversare un fiume, e per farlo ha bisogno di una barca. Il più antico modello è un’imbarcazione d’argento di una sessantina di centimetri trovata negli scavi di Ur in Mesopotamia, l’odierno Iraq, e risale al 2.000 a.C. Da allora si deve giungere all’Antico Egitto, e qui abbiamo una quantità incredibile di modelli trovati nelle loro tombe. Curiosamente tra gli Egizi e il Medioevo non abbiamo più tracce di modelli: il modellismo rinasce nel XV secolo sempre per motivi religiosi, ma questa volta come ex-voto, anche se i modelli più importanti e preziosi erano quelli costruiti dai cantieri navali: infatti fino al XVII secolo le navi non venivano progettate con un disegno; si decideva lunghezza, larghezza, alberi, armamento e poi ci si affidava a un cantiere navale di fiducia che “a occhio” costruiva la nave secondo le istruzioni ricevute. Per convincere il sovrano o il ministro che doveva finanziare la costruzione era però necessario fargli vedere qualcosa, e per mostrargli come sarebbe stata la nave si costruiva allora un modello spesso di grandi dimensioni, e quanto più era ben fatto tanto meglio rispondeva al marketing del tempo; spesso il re si innamorava del modello e lo teneva per sé, ed è per questo che molti di questi modelli – vere opere d’arte - sono giunti sino a noi e sono tutti custoditi gelosamente nei vari musei navali. Nel 1700 e 1800 molti modelli sono costruiti dai prigionieri di guerra che rinchiusi in navi-prigione ingannavano il tempo in questo modo e forse riuscivano a ottenere in cambio qualche trattamento di favore; i marinai delle baleniere che avevano spesso molto tempo libero durante la ricerca dei cetacei li costruivano nel loro angusto alloggio nel castello di prua.

This most attractive mid 19th century folk art cased diorama shows a view at sea with a large three mast English ship being chased in a racing situation by a smaller and faster single mast yacht. Both are passing by a lighthouse which is in the foreground.
This diorama has been beautifully handmade. The vessel, sails and lighthouse are all hand carved in wood and very nicely painted in bright colours as is the setting of the choppy sea which has most likely been formed in papier mâché.
The most appealing element of this piece is its small compact size which easily lends itself for display on a shelf, table or perhaps wall mounted.
The case is made from nailed pine boards which have been papered and painted black and finished with a glazed front set into putty.
The glass is original and period with lovely handmade imperfections.
This decorative diorama is in excellent original condition.
