About the Item
Pennsylvania hanging pie safe, in first surface green paint, with circular medallion and opposing fan decoration, circa 1850-1880
Pennsylvania hanging pie safe, made circa 1850-1870’s, with wonderfully punched tins that have a myriad of decorative geometric patterns. Constructed of pine and poplar, the single door has features circular medallions, set within opposing and overlapping fans. This is flanked on each side by narrow tin panels with a repeating circular design. Each side of the case is near to completely covered in tin, as-is the back. The sides feature a much larger wreath in the center than the one on the door, with arches above and below. The back has the largest medallion of all, flanked by opposing fans that punctuate each corner of the rectangular border.
The green paint is the first and only surface. This somewhat opaque on the tins, where it picks up apple green undertones. There is a cast iron spinner and a tiny porcelain knob. The top is a 20” wide plank, followed by shelves that are 18.25”, 18”, and 19” wide respectively, all single planks. The combination of form, color, and surface are beautiful. Probably of Lancaster County origin.
While constructed to hang from the ceiling, Pennsylvania pie safes like this one can be stood on the ground and used as a low cupboard. So long as they are not overly deep, I have found that they are useful in just about any room and serve as great pedestals for stoneware, drums, weathervanes, baskets, and other artwork.
Condition: The ear on the back left post is a replacement. The feet and the base framework along the bottom on each side, were subjected to rot of varying degrees. This was professionally restored. I restored the color here and on the ear. There is rust and there are losses elsewhere due to obvious use, as expected for this utilitarian form, made for a country kitchen.

Dauphin County Pennsylvania Paint Decorated Dower Chest Made for Madlen Nafzer
Located in York County, PA
Dauphin County, Pennsylvania Paint-Decorated Dower Chest, Made for Madlen Nafzer in 1808
This colorful Pennsylvania German dower chest, with pinwheels and tiny flowers on Robin's egg blue tombstone panels, set on a salmon ground, was found with the descendents of Madlen Nafzer of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Passed down through her family for several generations, the chest is accompanied by a softbound book that details the history of the Nafzer family. It tells the basic story of the woman for whom the chest was made in 1808; of how her family arrived on American soil and of their subsequent moves from Pennsylvania to Ohio to Indiana with the migrating Pennsylvania Dutch Community.
Past its striking color and decoration, one of the most spectacular things about this particular chest is its untouched paint surface and early condition. While a lateral portion of the left, back foot is absent, broken and lost during the family's possession, the back of the foot is present and extremely stabile. This had been broken, presumably at the same time, but the original piece was kept and I personally doweled it back into place. I made no attempt to replace the missing side portion, so that the chest could be kept in this unspoiled form, a rare thing among surviving Pennsylvania Dower chests...
