Queen Anne Period Blanket Chest with Two Whimsical Faces, ca 1740-1760

About the Item

QUEEN ANNE PERIOD BLANKET CHEST, CONNECTICUT RIVER VALLEY, PROBABLY MASSACHUSETTS, WITH BLACK DECORATION ON A RED GROUND, THAT INCLUDES TWO WHIMSICAL FACES, ca 1740-1760 This very early, American, painted blanket chest has decoration that, while subtle, places it among the most unusual I have encountered. Made circa 1740-1760, in a country, Queen Anne style, the dry, red paint is original throughout, adorned with a sparse array of wide, black brush strokes. In the top center of the front panel and in the center of the single drawer are whimsical faces. Rendered by the same hand, this is something I have never before seen on an American chest. A reasonable guess is that the piece was expressly made for the room of a child. Small in stature, the attractive, tombstone scalloping results in exceptional, wide, bat wing feet. The surface is original and impeccable. The simple, bail pulls are brass, with oval back plates. There is a typical, till-style glove box on the interior. The construction is entirely of cut nails, most of which are roseheaded, hammered into t-head form. The drawer is joined with an abnormally large number of small nails, in long rows. Made entirely of white pine, there is a two-board back with horizontally-oriented, 15-inch planks. Those used on the sides and top are 18 and 18.75 inches, respectively. The chest was picked from a house roughly 30 years ago in Middleburgh, New York by dealer Richard Axtel. Condition: There is a chip on the back, right-side foot. The small, cast iron hinges appear to be a replacement. There were probably snipe hinges originally. Some of the wood around them was expertly repaired/replaced, without affecting the painted. Provenance: Richard Axtell, Grace & Elliott Snyder.
