About the Item

This is a traditional oil portrait painting of a bearded man, likely from the 19th century based on the style and attire. The subject is depicted from the chest up, wearing formal dark clothing with a high white collar and a dark jacket. His expression is serious and composed, and he gazes directly at the viewer. The background is dark and plain, which helps focus attention on the man's face and upper body. The painting is executed in a realistic style with fine detail, especially in the rendering of the face and beard. The canvas shows signs of age, with visible wear at the corners and a slightly glossy finish, suggesting it may be varnished. The top left corner of the canvas is slightly damaged, curling away from the stretcher. Overall, the piece appears to be a formal portrait, possibly commemorating an important individual or family patriarch. The business owner purchased this portrait on his first buying trip to England over 40 years ago. It was sold as a "Portrait of a Scottish Gentleman" from the 1850's. We have not confirmed the origin or age - but this is what it was described as at the time of purchase. When purchased, it had damage, which was repaired by a New Orleans conservator at the time of purchase (see images). Painting measures 22.5" w 27"h 1"d
