Australian Indigenous Aboriginal Art Wandjina Spirit Figure Bark Painting
About the Item
A wonderful, unique, and very engaging original indigenous Australian Aboriginal painting featuring a Wandjina figure. The painting is made with natural earth pigments which are hand painted on natural wood bark. The Wandjina (also written sometimes as Wanjina and Wondjina and also known as Gulingi) are cloud and rain spirits from the Wanjina Wunggurr cultural bloc of Aboriginal Australians (The Wandjina is the sacred spirit of the Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Wunumbal tribes. No one else is permitted to depict it ), often depicted in rock art in northwestern Australia. Per some Dreamtime stories, it is said that the Wandjina created the landscape and its inhabitants. In the late 1960s and early 1970s several Mowanjum artists depicted traditional Wandjina on pieces of bark. Many of these artworks are now found in major museums and collections around the world.
A striking and original work. Would be a great addition to any Australian Aboriginal or tribal art/artifacts collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting.
