About the Item

A unique and beautifully preserved needlepoint textile portrait of Rabbi Akiva Eger (1761–1837), one of the most revered Talmudic scholars of the 18th–19th century. This hand-stitched artwork, completed around 1900–1903 (תר"ס/1903), offers a striking and respectful representation of the legendary rabbi, rendered in the popular folk art medium of embroidered tapestry. The composition presents Rabbi Eger seated and immersed in study, his wise features framed by a long white beard, and dressed in traditional rabbinic garb including a warm fur-trimmed hat. In front of him lies an open Sefer, which he appears to be writing in with a quill pen, capturing the essence of his scholarly dedication. The rich detailing and expression are achieved through a warm, earthy palette—featuring tones of red, burgundy, gold, cream, and brown—which also highlights the intricate craftsmanship of the needlework. At the bottom, the Hebrew inscription identifies the subject as "R. Akiva Eger", along with the Hebrew year תר"ס (1900) and the Gregorian year 1903, indicating when the work was created. The piece is framed behind glass in its original antique wooden frame with floral detail borders, further enhancing its historic character. A remarkable example of Jewish folk art and reverence for rabbinic scholarship, it would make a meaningful addition to any Judaica or textile art collection.
