About the Item
Charming early (circa 1830's) folk art painting, with very desirable subject matter, this oil on canvas depicts a pretty young girl; seated, wearing a fancy dress with her beloved dog looking on to her right with a plethora of colorful bright and lovely fresh cut flowers beneath her; all on an attractive preset picturesque landscape background with mountains, trees, and a bright, partially cloudy sky; the staged scenery portrayal is indicative of the upper class seeking to impress. The dress is cream colored; she has blue eyes and auburn hair while her wide eyed brown dog looks adoringly up at her.
The painting is unattributed (as with the preponderance of folk art portraits of this period), but my instincts say it is more than likely American. There is a stenciled marking on the back which states "G. Rowney & Co.; Manufacturers; 51 Rathbone Place; London". Having researched the British Museum archives we can determine that this was an artist supply company established in 1783 and was at the location indicated on the back of the painting (see images) from 1816 until 1859. It was called "George Rowney & Co." from 1832 until 1844. A significant part of their revenue was generated from exports of canvases, oil paints, brushes, varnish, and other artist supplies to America which was still in its infancy of manufacturing and consequently acquired much of their goods of this nature from England.
The subject matter, setting and style of the painting was way more indicative of an American scene, rather than that of early 19th century England at that time, nevertheless, there is no doubt of the date being circa 1830's. The painting has been thoroughly examined under both a black light and a powerful loop; the condition is excellent, and for the most part, completely original, save for some slight touch up spots here and there in the field. There is the right amount of crazing to validate its nearly 200 year old genesis. It has been professionally conserved and lightly cleaned. All in all, this is a lovely fine quality painting for the discerning collector of folk art portraiture. The painting is housed in, what appears to be, the original solid wooden carved step back and reeded walnut frame. It measures 2 1/2" wide all around (includes 3/4" gilt filet liner).
Provenance: The painting was recently acquired from a San Francisco estate.
Dimensions: actual painting: 27 1/4" high x 32" wide x 1" deep
with frame: 31 1/2" high x 36 1/2" wide x 2 1/2"
Note: American folk painting achieved it’s peak of popularity after 1800 when citizens wanted a symbol to record their newly achieved accomplishments in life. They wanted to express pride in their recently acquired status and preserve the moment for the benefit and amusement of future generations. The portrait was a way to document this in perpetuity.

Of Austrian manufacture circa 1820-1830, this Biedermeier picture (painting) clock is a naive and charming oil painting on metal, which depicts nine people dressed in colorful period clothes at various activities; a woman with her child and carrying fruit in a basket atop her head, two young lovers, a man in a boat, another man walking with his dog, while still another gentleman leaves the town hall.
