About the Item

Presented is a vintage WWII British War Savings Poster. This colorful blue and yellow poster features a British bulldog wearing an HMS Victory sailor cap. Set within a red speech bubble above the dog is the text, “More Ships- Come On!,” printed in red letters. Below, “War Savings are Warships…,” is printed in white and yellow clock letters against a navy background. The poster was issued by three different committees- the National Savings Committee in London, the Scottish Savings Committee in Edinburgh, and the Ulster Savings Committee in Belfast. Following the outbreak of the Second World War, the War Office reorganized the Regional Savings Committees and launched the War Savings Campaign. Savings groups were set up by volunteers in work places, schools and clubs to promote the purchase of savings stamps and bonds. An individual could buy a savings stamp for as little as sixpence or for two shillings and sixpence. Once they purchased a total of 15 shillings worth, they could exchange the stamps for a National Savings Certificate. If they had £5 worth of stamps, they could exchange for a Defense Bond. Both certificates and bonds were guaranteed to give a good rate of return after the war. Posters printed by the War Savings Committee encouraged people not to spend their extra cash on unnecessary items when they could use it to contribute to the war effort through the purchase of war savings, instead. U.S. Navy "Navy Day October 27th" Vintage Poster by Matt Murphey, 1940
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Offered is an original U.S. Navy propaganda poster advertising "Navy Day." Below a large image of a U.S. battleship is block text reading "Navy Day, October 27th." The poster dates to 1940, shortly after the American entry into World War II. The poster highlights an impressive depiction of a column of U.S. battleships within a red border with small white anchors. The printed signature of U.S. Navy artist matte Murphey appears at the bottom right of the image, while the bottom edge of the poster bears the printing line: "NRB - 27919 - 8-5-40 - 18M." Each of the ships depicted in the image appear to feature cage masts, indicating that the artist was working from a reference image taken prior to the modernization of the U.S. battleship force in the late 1920s-early 1930s. The first “Navy Day” was celebrated on October 27, 1922. October 27, 1922 was suggested by the Navy League to recognize Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday. Roosevelt had been an Assistant Secretary of the Navy...

"Join the Army at Once & Help to Stop an Air Raid" Vintage British WWI Poster
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
"Join the Army at Once & Help to Stop an Air Raid" Vintage British WWI Poster, 1915 This vintage British recruitment poster, published in 1915, calls on men to join the Army. In full, the text reads, “It is far better to face the bullets than to be killed at home by a bomb / Join the Army at once & help stop an air raid / God save the king.” On the poster, a silhouette of London lies beneath a spotlighted German Zeppelin looming above. This recruitment poster is displayed in a custom-built archival frame. WWI was the first time British civilians were in the direct line of fire in the modern era, creating the idea of the "homefront.’" Traditionally concerned with its coastal borders, Britain was highly unprepared for a sudden and prolonged German air raid. Throughout 1915 and 1916, successive German Zeppelin attacks ravaged several cities, but most notably London. These attacks continued until 1918, but newer aircrafts were used. The Germans hoped to enrage the British people so that they would demand their government made peace. However, their plan backfired when the United Kingdom cried for German defeat...
