Antique quilt: "Delectable Mountains" or "sawtooth" variation, third quarter of the 19th century, New England origin. Blue and white quilts have always been among the favorites of collectors; here is an exceptional example of fine quilt stitchery at its best. Pieced of blue and white calico, the quilting patterns include "feathered circles and lines," "parallel" and "straight line", all meticulously hand-sewn in hundreds of tiny stitches to form an extravagantly rich background throughout this extra large spread. The starkly graphic piecework of blue calico against the white ground strikes a sharp contrast to the overall fancy stitchery. Quilts of the 19th century were sometimes very large, to accommodate beds with mattresses high off the floor. This is a happy surprise for people who want a spectacular antique spread for their king-sized bed.
