About the Item

This fabulous 48 star Patriotic quilt has the embroidered title "Stars and Stripes Forever." The stripes of the flag are created in an unusual way. Rather than using horizontal strips, the maker made her work much more difficult by using short diagonal strips. It gives something of the effect of the flag waving in the breeze.The indigo border, rarely seen in patriotic quilts, beautifully sets off the flag. In the upper right hand corner are appliqued and embroidered images of Betsy Ross; George Washington: Franklin Delano Roosevelt; Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. The date 1922 was sewn on the bottom white border. The stitches were removed but the date is still visible. It is possible that the date was removed because the figural images were added at a later date. This mystery adds to the charm of the quilt. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. It is from the Gettysburg area of Pennsylvania.
